TROUBLESHOOTING YOUR MACBOOK PRO TO REMOUNT AN EXTERNAL LaCie 4TB HARD DISK!

HARD DISK NOT MOUNTING OR DISAPPEARED FROM YOUR MAC? HERE’S SOME TROUBLESHOOTING ADVICE AS TO HOW WE AND GOT OUR MACBOOK PRO TO REMOUNT AN EXTERNAL LaCie 4TB HARD DISK!

Recently we’ve integrated the streamlined 4TB LaCie Hard Disk into our studio arsenal. It’s a sharp and sexy looking device that fits in your palm. It has a great capacity for speedy transfers and a sizeable 4TB capacity. It connects with just one USB C cable and our model came with the Thunderbolt USB 3.0 connector for even speedier transfers (to use this feature, be sure that your laptop or desktop can receive this connector). Plus, the LaCie is formatted in FAT32 which means that the device is a swinger so to speak. It can move from a Mac to a Windows Machine without a problem.

Perfect right? Yes! However, this weekend the device suddenly ceased to be recognized by the MacBook Pro. Yikes. 4TB of info! As great as Mac is, unfortunately this is a common problem apparently. So, we’ve written this blog to help you out. We tried and tried to get the device to mount with restarts, resetting the PRAM settings, cleaning up the available space on the laptop so the large 4TB capacity could be read . . . NADA! After a full half day of trying to fix the problem, admittedly there was some cursing and and swearing involved, we thought to let the problem go for a while. After dinner we returned to the scene. We tried mounting the device through the terminal function in the Mac using the diskutil terminal command.

diskutil mount

Unfortunately, no dice. Then we tried the …

diskutil list

Dice!

We could see that the machine was recognizing the device at least internally.

/dev/disk1 (external, physical): #: TYPE NAME SIZE IDENTIFIER 0: GUID_partition_scheme *4.0 TB disk1 1: EFI EFI 209.7 MB disk1s1 2: Microsoft Basic Data LaCie 4.0 TB disk1s2

So, we tried to mount the specific disk.

diskutil mount disk1s1

No Dice!

diskutil mount disk1s2

Also, No Dice!

Now what? The answer was written right there on the screen.

Microsoft Basic Data LaCie 4.0 TB

We plugged the hard disk into a Windows 10 Microsoft Machine and Windows could see the device. So, we plugged it back into the Mac – NADA – again. We plugged it back into the Windows machine and then Windows detected some errors that needed to be repaired on the hard disk. We clicked YES to repair. Within 15 minutes the device was repaired and mounting on the Mac Book Pro again. Voila! Problem fixed. Here’s a link to check out more on the LaCie 4TB mobile device. Despite this glitch, it is performing very well and was well worth the purchase.
